The bamboo sporting goods industry is very much in it’s infancy. Being that bamboo is now an accepted replacement to wood, product developers and manufacturers are realizing the benefits of the engineered material for its’ structural properties, its’ strength to weight ratio, and it marketing differentiatability.
Different options/types:
There are a number of products now being made with bamboo, most of which use the high strength to weight ratio of the panel form, along with the lack of voids, in their developments.
- Bamboo Skateboards – the decks are made of laminated bamboo multiplied veneer
- Bamboo Skis – the core of the skis are made with laminated solid veneer strips
- Bamboo Surfboards – paper thin bamboo veneer on a coated fiberglass core
- Kayak Paddles – engineered bamboo shaft with carbon-fiber blades
- Bamboo Boomerangs – similar to traditional wood boomerangs, but made from bamboo
- Bamboo Bikes – bamboo tubed bikes – strong, light, and natural
Possible Certifications (and what they mean):
Available in FSC- certified, NAUF (No added Urea Formaldehyde), and low-VOC options.
